Tips for Creating a Home Inventory List

How to prepare a home inventory for your insurance.

Your furniture, clothes, artwork, family heirlooms in the attic, anniversary jewelry, and kitchen appliances – your home houses it all and more. You want to protect it all as best you can, that’s why you got homeowners insurance in Phoenix. However, if a disaster like a robbery or a flood happened, do you know what would be lost and how much the value of the belongings were? This is where having a home inventory comes in. This list of belongings and their value makes for an easy reference when filing a claim! Here are a few tips on how to get started.

Move room by room. Grab a camera and a notepad and take pictures of every item in the room and note their value. If you have receipts, dig them out, too. Moving room by room is often easier to keep track of what you’ve recorded rather than moving by category.

Visit the appraiser. If you have items of high value, such as artwork and jewelry, visit the appraiser to get a better idea of the value. Even if you got an item appraised, you might find that items have changed value with time, such precious stones. Belongings that are expensive may need additional coverage.

Update it often. When you sell, donate, get given, or purchase new items, it’s a good idea to update your inventory. You don’t want to buy a brand new TV and later on find it’s not covered by insurance because you forgot to add it to the inventory list.

These tips will help you to protect your belongings should you need to file a claim. When you’re looking to protect your property as best you can, contact your insurance professionals at AimPro Insurance. Our dedicated experts are ready to assist you with all your insurance needs.
