Roll Up Your Sleeves To Give Back This Month
January is National Blood Donor Month, which means it is the perfect time to roll up your sleeves to do some good. National Blood Donor Month has been celebrated since 1970 as a way to bring attention to the constant need for blood and to help recognize those who have done their part to save lives by donating.
National Blood Donor Month is celebrated during January to call attention to the low blood donation rates during the winter. There are many reasons that blood donations drop during the winter, including bad weather conditions that cause blood drives to be cancelled, holiday travel plans, and more people getting sick and not being able to donate blood.
Every type of blood is needed to help keep a reliable and healthy blood supply. However, there is an increased need for type O negative blood, since it is the universal donor and can be transfused into anyone, no matter his or her blood type. Type O negative blood is mostly used during trauma and accident situations where there is no time to determine the blood type of an injured individual. No matter your blood type, each time you donate blood, you have the opportunity to save up to three lives.
The process to donate blood is fast and simple. After a mini-physical to check your hemoglobin level, pulse, blood pressure, and temperature, you are set up in a comfortable chair. The actual donation process only takes about 10 minutes and when you are done donating, you get to enjoy a delicious snack and something to drink. Afterwards, you can go on with your daily activities, just make sure to stay hydrated.
