Fight the flu early with the flu shot.
Flu season is here, and while that may not be the most exciting time of the year, it is important to recognize. Now is the best time to get your flu shot to help you avoid the flu this season and keep feeling your best, and this year’s vaccine is expected to be much more effective than vaccines in the past.
Flu season typically starts in October and runs through May, leaving you susceptible to calling in sick from work or having to keep your kids home from school. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention does not start keeping count of the number of flu cases for the season until the end of October, but doctors advise everyone to get the flu shot as soon as possible since it takes about two weeks for the body to build up the immunity needed to protect against the virus.
Keep in mind that the flu virus changes a little bit every year, which means you will need to get a new flu shot every year. Even though the high temperature, pains, coughing, and chills that come along with the flu can be manageable for most healthy adults, they can be deadly for children and the elderly.
If you do get the flu this season, head straight to your doctor and ask for an antiviral medicine, which can help to reduce the number of days that you are sick, helping to ease your symptoms. Keep in mind that many doctors will not regularly prescribe antiviral medicine, so make sure to specifically ask for it. The sooner you are able to head to the doctor, the more effective the treatment will be.
