BBQ Grilling Safety Tips

BBQ Grilling Safety Tips

Now that warmer weather is here to stay, you may be planning a backyard cookout. To protect your home, your family, and yourself from injury and property loss, follow these four tips for grilling safety.

1. Properly position the grill.

Your grill should be placed at least ten feet from the house. You never know what could happen when you are grilling, so giving the grill some space could prevent catching your house on fire.

2. Clean your grill before and after you cook on it.

Grease is extremely flammable, and a grease fire can quickly get out of control. Not only do you risk ruining your steaks by cooking on a grease-encrusted grill, but you could get a nasty burn if the fire flares.

3. Never leave the grill unattended.

Even if you don’t have small children running around who could get inured from a hot grill, you should still stay close by when it is lit. If you are there to put out a small fire before it gets out of control, you can avoid injuries, explosions, and house fires.

4. Keep decorations away from the grill.

Of course, you want a festive atmosphere for your party, but don’t decorate the grilling area. Baskets, umbrellas, and overhanging lanterns can suddenly catch fire if grease flares up on the grill.
